This is one of my favorites, because it just doesn’t work like that. The reason men will build more muscle is that they have large amounts of this little thing called Testosterone. Women actually also have it, but just not in the amounts necessary to cause the muscle growth you see in men.

Now I’m sure you’ve heard the stories that some women tell about how they started lifting weights and “bulked up”. I’ve also heard this. However, upon further questioning, I’ve found that those that voiced this complaint were also gaining weight as they lifted. If you gain five pounds of muscle mass but also gain five pounds, you will look bigger. If you maintain your current weight and gain those same five pounds of muscle, you will be SMALLER. Have you ever seen five pounds of meat and five pounds of fat side by side? There is a huge difference in volume between the two.

Weight training also helps in weight loss. The minimum caloric requirement for a pound of muscle to live is between 35 and 50 calories a day. Now, imagine you put on 10 pounds of muscle. Your body will be burning, let’s say, an extra 400 calories a day. By the way, that’s if your sitting on the couch, watching TV and eating Doritos. If your active it’s more. Can you imagine how much easier it would be to lose weight? Suddenly that whole weight training thing takes on a whole new look.

But Joe, I just don’t have the time and gyms are so expensive. (Maybe they are also a little intimidating? I know because years ago on my first trip I was a little intimidated.) You don’t need to train with weights at a gym. This can all be done at home with just a few inexpensive pieces of equipment. When I’m training someone at their home, everything I bring fits into a gym bag. So, no more excuses. It’s time to get started.

When doing any kind of chest press move it is important not to let your elbows extend behind your body. If you do, it increases the chances for shoulder injuries and doesn’t increase strength any more than doing the shorter range of motion. Also, I prefer to use dumbbells instead of a bar because it puts your arms in a more natural position. Finally don’t use more weight than you can control. I’ve lost count of the number of times I see people use terrible form just to get the weight to move because they are soooo concerned about looking strong for others in the gym. SLOW DOWN AND DO IT RIGHT!!!

One of the most important things you can do before starting your workout is to spend a few extra minutes to warm up. I know that in this busy world we just want to get it done, but a good warm up is so very important. It increases blood flow to the muscles and increases range of motion. By doing this it reduces the chances for sprains or tears. Do ten minutes on your favorite cardio machine, then a couple of easy full body movements and your ready to go.
